A Mother's Day Address

A Verse (or Worse) · Musings

In the grand scheme of life, we may come to realize that we are, each one, artisans tasked with an ancient and noble commission: to weave a unique tapestry from the threads of our experiences, contributing to the magnificent array in the great hall of existence.

Our looms, bequeathed by our forefathers, are resilient and enduring. With meticulous care and disciplined purpose, we employ these tools to craft something enduring and significant. These looms produce textiles of remarkable quality: sturdiness, discipline, reliability, and integrity. Together, these virtues create something truly admirable, maybe even something 'good.'

Yet, in the grand narrative of Creation, the Master Craftsman fashioned not merely the good but the "very good." We mirror this "very good-ness" in our life's work by creating things of true beauty... and to teach us how, God gave us mothers.

Mothers require of us more than just precision of technique; they grow in us the wisdom to discern which threads and movements will lend elegance and strength to the design. Their deft hands and keen aesthetic sense inform and elevate our craft, teaching us to select each thread with intention, build connections that resist fraying, and arrange patterns that transform mere cloth into art.

From our mothers' intuitive grasp of color and pattern, we learn to evoke strength, compassion, and wisdom. They balance the warp and weft, ensuring that each intersection represents harmony. Mothers are attuned to the subtle tensions between threads and show us how to make key adjustments with care, ensuring no strand is stretched too thin or left unnoticed.

In the fabric woven by mothers, we perceive more than mere functionality; we discern layers of meaning intricately woven into each pattern. They transform humble fibers into vibrant designs that narrate tales of adventure and aspiration. As craftsmen, mothers remind us that a tapestry is woven not merely for utility but for the joy and wonder it evokes.

Mothers possess an "eye to see," recognizing the strength and subtlety of each thread. Through discernment, planning, and coordination, mothers hope to address every detail, even before the loom's shuttle is set in motion. They teach us to perceive potential in every new thread and knot, ensuring that every element finds its place in the tapestry. They invite us to recognize beauty and strength even in seemingly frayed strands, ensuring that every element finds its place in the tapestry.

With an "ear to hear," mothers attune themselves to the sounds of well-being in our hearts, minds, and surroundings. They detect distress before it manifests, listening with compassion and empathy. They address our true needs, crafting responses that offer solace, encouragement, and wisdom.

The mother's hands bring two threads together in ways that make it three. In their knots, we see the combinations of red, yellow, and blue transformed into brilliant shades and hues of green, orange, and purple. Her ingenuity transforms simple materials into treasures and leftovers into feasts, stitching generations together into epic stories of resourcefulness and warmth. They teach us to appreciate the beauty in the diversity of people, perspectives, and purpose.

In relationships, the mother's transformative touch is most profound. Her thoughtful inquiries challenge us to reconsider our convictions, assumptions, and presumptions, fostering deeper understanding, compassion, and love. Conversations become tapestries of emotional insight and mutual respect, tinged with empathy and kindness.

Mothers' feet are never idle, carrying them to realms of opportunity. In work and enterprise, their creativity and compassion transform challenges into solutions. They lead with innovation, weaving ideas into cohesive and successful endeavors. Whether seeking to meet unexpressed needs or restructuring processes to increase efficiency, their others-centered leadership weaves disparate ideas and possibilities into a cohesive and successful enterprise. Under their influence, complex patterns are captured as life lessons within us, preparing us to handle the complexities of the world with agility. Her signature style—unique to each—is visible in the way we handle relationships, challenges, and successes, a lasting imprint on our characters.

Mothers are not without flaw. They encounter knots and make their own missteps, yet their resilience shines as they navigate imperfections. They unwind knots with care, retrace steps with humility, and offer sincere apologies. They mend frayed relationships with courage and strength. In this, mothers model the importance of accountability and grace, working always to restore trust and understanding. They repeatedly prove that each thread, even the tangled ones, can be woven back into the tapestry to create a pattern of growth and redemption.

Our mothers did not begin as masters; they became them. How? They possessed and cultivated something powerful: grit. This grit fostered the commitment necessary to create true art, expressed in familiar exhortations: dig deep, seek help, reflect humbly, forge a path forward, and rise above challenges.

On this occasion, we realize we are inexcusably overdue in pausing our lives to belatedly express the depth of our genuine gratitude, honor, and love for those who've served us so well in the exhausting work of motherhood. We acknowledge how we often take them for granted, and this moment of repentant pause is transformative. In it, for a moment, we step back enough to see a bigger picture: the whole of our collective weaving. It is in this moment we find ourselves breath-taken at the view.

From this perspective, we can finally see the influence of their guidance and instruction embodied in new patterns expressing grace and kindness, communicating themes of empathy, excellence, care, and nurture. From here, we can comprehend the scope and scale of their work; this moment of distance allows us the perspective needed to appreciate their tireless dedication. Today we can see how they've imbued into each thread their strength, resilience, and flexibility. Wrapped in the warmth of these fabrics, we feel their gentleness, humility, and patience. Then, at our own stations, we return to our own craft, strangely aware and earnestly grateful for the guiding hands they have used to shape in us the patterns of an enduring legacy. In each resulting knot, row, and flourish, we echo their wisdom and pass on their whispers of encouragement.

As mothers guide the shuttle, incorporating a spectrum of colors into the weave, they bring diversity and depth to their tapestry and to ours. Navigating together the varying patterns of each day, mothers embed intricate life lessons within us, preparing us to handle the complexities of the world with agility. These woven strands reveal us vulnerably: saying much about who we are and forecasting who we may become. Their signature style—unique to each—becomes visible in the way we embrace our relationships, engage our challenges, and enjoy our successes. Their lasting imprint—a legacy made tangible—becomes evident in expressions of our character. We inherit not only the patterns they've created but also the freedom and responsibility to adapt these patterns into our own unique designs.

The art of our mothers supports and encourages our own weaving; the rich tapestry we produce not only tells her story and our story; it also intertwines with the larger fabric of society. As we incorporate lessons learned from the hands of our mothers, we weave strength, resilience, and grace into every fiber of the universe we inhabit. When others admire the beauty and complexity of our tapestry, let us remind them of the skilled hands that taught, inspired, and encouraged us. Let us show them the timeworn, calloused hands of our mothers, whose influence is at the heart of everything we may become.

When you evaluate the tapestry of my life and find something lovely, valuable, excellent, or praiseworthy, please don't congratulate me; remind me to thank my mother.
