Ok, so Emmy and I just got home from going to the Coronado High School talent show. Jessi invited us because she was singing in it … and man did she sing!!! This may not sound politically correct, but I’ll say it because in Lubbock, Texas, I know it to be true - when a white girl is singing and black girls in the audience are clapping and whistling and shouting, “Girl, you got soul,” and, “Go mama - sing it!” you know that something unique is happening on stage. And it was unique … her sweet and typically gentle voice swelling with power and depth in an a capella version of “Amazing Grace” (complete with two key changes!) … And freedom … free to speak truth from the depths of her soul … to an audience of her peers … and her teachers … wow. Folks - I heard a testimony today - that one has been freed from blindness and has walked through many toils and snares - by God’s grace alone. It is an amazing thing to have church in a public high school, and it was certainly that…amazing. Thank you Jessi for seizing the moment and raising up praise to God … I just don’t have the words. Thank you God, for the presence of your spirit in a moment typically consecrated to showing off the talent of individuals, for the gift of song, and the boldness to use it for your glory. Amen, sistah! You go girl!
